ABOUT US

Our Story

SIDESHIFT was born of the site.

We create tools and pouches for ourselves and our peers that elevate comfort, pride and efficiency across various technical departments within the entertainment industry.

Our origin story is fairly simple: Our founder Brett - started his career in the early 2000’s working in school theatres as a lighting and audio tech, eventually leading to senior technical, management and production director roles on various projects both locally and globally.

Throughout his nearly 20-year career in production, he decided to invest time and energy into the creation of SIDESHIFT.

His experience in the entertainment industry makes him uniquely qualified to lead the SIDESHIFT team.

Why Australian Made?

We're a young manufacturing business in Melbourne's West, operating in a highly saturated and wasteful global textiles industry.

Making our gear here in Australia gives us total control of our material sourcing, design process, testing, production, batch volume, quality control, fulfillment and customer service.

We also like the idea of maintain a very nimble production process, allowing us to test new ideas and bring new products to market - without the need for massive batches or excessive lead times.

Our Environmental Commitment

We won’t use more than we need

We believe that every piece of fabric, plastic, or cardboard should be used. While it can be easier to buy in bulk and discard what’s left over, we’re committed to buying only what we need, using everything we buy, and finding uses for what might be left over. This includes our energy needs and usage.

Reuse, recycle, repair

We want to find use where others see waste. Wherever possible, we’re committed to buying recyclable material and recycling things ourselves, safely reusing what might otherwise be thrown away, and repairing fixable equipment instead of thoughtlessly purchasing replacements. We limit how much wastage leaves the building, storing reusable or recyclable material for future use where practical.

We will balance durability and lifespan with environmental cost

There can be a trade-off between the durability and lifespan of a product, and how much it damages the environment to produce it. In a lot of instances, the more durable a product is, the worse it can be for the environment to produce it.

This is because some of the toughest materials - like heavy plastics and chemical coatings - are carbon-intensive to create, and can take centuries to decompose. However, it can sometimes be more environmentally friendly to create and ship one product that lasts a few years than it is to create and ship the same product every couple of months, over and over again.

We’re committed to being attentive to this balancing act, and to investigate ways to increase durability while lowering the carbon emissions produced by our products.

The Future

We're continuously developing new products, optimising our processes, and evolving our position in the manufacturing industry in Australia.

SIDESHIFT aims to make a positive contribution and be an active participant in the textiles manufacturing industry in Australia and it's community.
